HOW TO PACK FOR A HOLIDAY
Are you already busy allocating your leave, scouring the internet for inspiring destinations and looking forward to switching your emails off for more than a weekend? Whether it's an annual family getaway, a friends' weekend or a romantic escape, holidays are, quite frankly, a delight. The only puzzling part of the whole fandango is calculating how many pairs of socks can see us through a fortnight and how many outfits are too many. Ditch project management for suitcase management and enjoy packing a perfectly curated collection of holiday clothes, from your shirts to your swim shorts.
THE HOLIDAY SHOPBESIDE THE SEASIDE
Suits are out and shorts are in. Our men's summer holiday clothes for beach destinations include plenty of colourful tees and comfortable cotton shorts. Polo tops are a versatile option – they're equally at home on the sand or in the bar. – and a short-sleeved shirt takes you from day to night.
Leather sandals are equally high up our list, perfect for pairing with your swim shorts as you stroll to the pool or the shore.Just make sure there's a cool linen shirt and some neutral-coloured chinos in your suitcase, as you might stumble upon a chic seafood restaurant.
After dark, swap out the flip-flops for some chic boat shoes or slip-ons to look elegant as you perambulate down the promenade. A floral holiday shirt is another classic that'll always look the part against an ocean sunset.
Travel tip: Sunscreen, shades, and a hat are your daytime essentials, but don't forget a lightweight Merino knit to wear when the evenings stretch on.
THE LONG WEEKEND
The key here is the capsule wardrobe – a pair of non-iron (and stain-resistant) chinos, a couple of smart-casual shirts (think checks or chambrays), and a blazer for the evening. In cooler weather, add a V-neck Merino jumper as an extra layer. Accessories are a space-saving way of sharpening your look, so slip in a belt, a statement tie for smart dinners, and a set of gleaming cufflinks.
Travel tip: Keep toasty in the great outdoors with a supersoft lambswool scarf.
THE CITY BREAK
Yes, you may spend most of your working life in the city, but this is off-duty dressing… and it's different. Think effortless elegance when packing for a city break. If you're aiming for cosmopolitan comfort, go for mix-and-match separates in cool and subtly stretchy fabrics. When it's summer in the city, there's nothing like a pair of classic chinos paired with a polo, or play the enviably nonchalant man-about-town in jeans and a tee, elevated with a lightweight twill or cotton blazer. It's worth taking a tie and a smarter pair of shoes – you don't want to miss out on that must-have restaurant reservation.
Travel tip: What's your wet-weather plan? Remember your Italian raincoat and a classic black umbrella.
THE BUSINESS TRIP
While they strictly aren't holidays (although they usually have their moments), business trips still involve a suitcase. Roll up a non-iron shirt and a new tie for every day, along with a spare of each. For maximum confidence – and absolutely no crumples – our crease-resistant Travel Suit is a must-pack. And to ensure you arrive feeling comfortably fresh, make the trip in a Tyrwhitt Cool shirt As ever, don't leave home without a lightweight, Merino knit as a mid-layer in case your destination is chilly or just very keen on the air-con..
Travel tip: Check if the venue has a gym or pool – you may want to bring your sports kit.
