I wanted some smart, short sleeved shirts, something you might wear a tie with. Out of total of 300 or so varieties of shirts listed, only TWO were offered in that category. They were essentially the same, just different colours. I thought at first that it was just maybe the size/fit combination that was restricting the available ones, but it wasn't. Other sizes and fit combinations I tried came out the same. Determined not to give up, I had a look at the next best thing - what I think they call 'smart casual'. That brought up a larger range of, mostly, button-down collar shirts. However, it also made another change - the size categories. I wanted 16.5" Classic fit, but now that I was into 'smart/casual', the sizes metamorphosed into 'M/L/XL' etc. Based on all of the information about sizes available on the website (and full marks for the comprehensive nature of that), it looked like XL Classic was the right one, so I ordered one of those. When they arrived, the first two (16.5" Classic fit) were packed and looked as I expected, with neat collars. The third one, however, the 'smart casual' one looked like it had come from a market stall. Collar crushed and flat, in a polythene bag, and frankly, looking cheap and nasty. I'm all for minimum packaging but this seemed a step too far to me. Not only that but as it was 'non-iron', it wasn't clear to me whether the creases and crushes in the collar would ever come out. However, I didn't want to be totally swayed by the poor packaging, so tried it on in the hope that the manufacturer knows what they are doing and that it would actually look ok when on. It didn't. The collar hung more like a crushed horse's harness than a shirt, and, although there was copious room around the chest and waist, the shirt actually felt strangely tight across the shoulders when I leaned forward. I therefore returned it and exchanged it for a sleeved shirt of similar pattern, available in the size I wanted. It hasn't arrived yet, but hopefully it will indeed be more 'smart' than 'casual'. Amongst other things, there's clearly a size issue but despite the wealth of information available about sizes, I really had to come to the conclusion that what I needed really was somewhere between the L and XL sizes I've been around on the planet for many years now and over the years have worn shirts with or without ties, but always with smart collars - long sleeve in the winter and short sleeve in the summer, but otherwise fairly similar. Has that gone now? It's all been quite disappointing - even disheartening - really.
