Charles Tyrwhitt is the ultimate love letter to our founder Nick's obsession with dressing well. We've looked back at the moments that shaped us and made Tyrwhitt what it is today.
Nick starts Charles Tyrwhitt from his room at Bristol University. 8 shirts and 8 ties on a one-page leaflet.
We think brass collar stiffeners are essential for a flawless shirt, so we include them for free.
We hit £1M in sales. We do help men look and feel like a million bucks, after all!
Nick starts to feel a little lonely, so we hire our first employee. No point rushing!
Quite honestly, we go through some hard times, and the business folds. But not for long...
Our first store opens on London’s iconic Jermyn Street. Nick’s dream really becomes a reality.
What is this thing called the Internet? We’re not quite sure, but we join the online club and launch our website.
Welcome to Madison Avenue, New York – our first US store.
We have a go at women’s and children’s clothes. Needless to say, it’s not our finest hour…
We see the light. We’re here to make it easy for men to dress well. Great quality. Great value. Great service. Foot to the floor!
And here we are. 40 years and counting. 120 stores globally and over 2,000,000 men with great taste wearing Tyrwhitt around the world.
40 at 40
A big birthday deserves a big celebration, a lot of appreciation and a little reflection. Nick shares some of his favourite-of-all-time products from the last 40 years.
“40 years ago, I wanted to create shirts that didn’t cost the earth, and I wanted to make it easy for men to dress well. The twill shirt is the rock on which the business was built. I owe this little beauty everything.”
The Original Twill
It's what we're known (and loved!) for. The Non-Iron Twill was our first-ever shirt, and paved the way for the rest.
“When we launched these, I wasn’t sure. We bought small quantities, and I worried I might have to wear them for the rest of my life just to clear the stock. I was very wrong – They almost sell faster than we can make them.”
Pure Linen
This one's a belter. A hot-weather hero and casual shirt bestseller, linen is the fabric to live in for all your days in the sun.
“If you’d told me 40 years ago we might do a “Smart Polo” one day, I’d have laughed. Polo shirts are for wearing on galloping elephants in Rajasthan. Not these ones! These are an effortless dress up, dress down go-to.”
Lean into Smart Polos
We're not just smart! Our signature polo range has a whole host of colours, styles and sleeve lengths to pick from.
“I could live in these. In fact, I do live in them! I can’t put my finger on it, but they just make me look good. I know that sounds a little smug and is probably something for others to decide, but I just can’t help it. They make me feel fantastic too.”
The Ultimate Everyday Chinos
We've sorted the bottom half too. The comfiest, most versatile pair of trousers, with clever tech built in. Throw on and go.
“I love our cloud-soft Merino. So many colours and styles to choose from. The Zip-Neck is my favourite. Soft wool and a sporty, practical zip. What’s not to love?”
Refreshing Layers
Always be prepared with our fine yet effortless knitwear. Dress it up or down - we've got a jumper for every dress code.
“Don’t tell anybody, but I am not good at looking after my clothes. I need a suit that always looks good, never creases, stretches a little, but has to be 100% wool (it’s rude to electrocute somebody when you shake hands!). This is that ultimate suit.“
Jack of All Suits
We all know nothing beats a proper whistle and flute. As one of our first products, we've really perfected our range.
